Larissa Lockshin Canadian, b. 1992

Biography
b. 1992, Toronto, Canada. Lives and works in Queens, New York

Larissa Lockshin paints colourful, confectionary abstractions on satin. A shiny fabric typically reserved for dressmaking is used unprimed, allowing breaks of light to adorn the surface. The satin is transformed when stretched, generating a harmony of positive and negative space. Raw patches of unprimed satin mirror their hued counterparts. Both improvisational and well-edited culmination of marks are drawn and smudged onto the surface with oil and pastels. Built from a movement of tinted streaks and loops, an atmosphere arises. Light bounces back and forth between the rich pigmented blots and the sheen of the fabric. While conceived as abstract gestures, motifs and colour arrangements invite associations of landscape, with hints of horizons, birds, petals, branches, clouds and sky. The tension between the matte pigment and the lustrous fabric edges into the realm of the sculptural. Hand-carved wooden frames extend the momentum of Lockshin’s expression and cement the artist’s desire to emphasize objecthood over image content.
