Cob Gallery is pleased to present new paintings by Tomo Campbell and Tahnee Lonsdale for Untitled Art Fair, Miami Beach

Inspired by a diverse array of source material, Tomo Campbell’s large-scale oil paintings are constantly altering, extending and breaking down conventions. His abstracted depictions of ‘traditional’ subjects such as hunting, parades and explorers are, as he puts it, ‘never quite solid or whole’, yet they exude an extraordinarily rich sense of vision. ‘I try to paint in a way that makes the paint vibrate’, says Campbell, ‘to make it look light and delicate and on the cusp of shifting’. His bold, layered arrangements of complementary colours, reminiscent of the Rococo, offer multiple focal points and keep the eye in constant motion. Balancing activity and stasis, confidence and doubt, his works occupy a fertile space somewhere between the known and the undiscovered.
Working between the figurative and the abstract, Tahnee Lonsdale produces paintings that are intimate, agonised, tender and formidable. Developed through an intuitive process of drawing in response to particular emotional states, her canvases are populated by distinctively feminine forms whose swooping, structural physicality is an assertion of both power and vulnerability. Emotional experience is rendered as both private moment and public rite: a process in which interior life is turned outward and the individual self is split into multiple bodies entwined with or superimposed upon one another. Layering colour within restricted palettes, establishing depth through blocks and textures rather than gradations of tone, Lonsdale modulates acute autobiographical introspection into moments of collective affinity.
Tomo Campbell (b. 1988) lives and works in London. Forthcoming solo shows include County Gallery, Palm Beach, FL, USA (2021) and Q Contemporary, Hong Kong (2022). Previously solo exhibitions include 'Go on Then', Cob Gallery, London (2020); 'There', Cob Gallery, London (2018); and 'If You Know How To Get Here, Come', Gallery Voltaire, Melbourne (2017). Campbell has featured in numerous group exhibitions and fairs including 'Veil', Arusha Gallery, Edinburgh (2018); Dallas Art Fair, Texas, USA (2017); Palm Tree Gallery, London (2015); Rushgrove House, London (2012); and Motion Gallery, London (2010). Campbell was awarded the first artist in residence place at the English National Ballet which he participated in between 2012-2013.
A graduate of Byam Shaw School of Art, Tahnee Lonsdale (b. 1982) has exhibited in solo shows in London, Hong Kong, New York and Los Angeles, where she is currently based. Recent solo exhibitions include 'Under The Shell' at Cob Gallery, London (UK) in May 2021, and ‘Now You See Me’, at Mine Project in Hong Kong in February 2021. Lonsdale has an upcoming solo exhitbion with Night Gallery, LA (USA) in Spring 20222, and her work was shown with Night Gallery (LA) at NADA Art Fair Miami 2020 and Frieze New York 2021.
